Claude vs Gemini

Anthropic vs Google. Different tradeoffs on craft, ecosystem, and price.

The real decision axis here is depth versus reach. Claude is Anthropic's focused bet: strong writing, strong coding, and an agent ecosystem (Claude Code, MCP) built around doing serious work with the model. Gemini is Google's everywhere bet: woven into Search, Gmail, Docs, Android, and Chrome, with huge context windows and native multimodality. I use Claude daily for client work and Gemini through Google's products, and they feel less like rivals and more like tools for different jobs.

Two wrinkles worth knowing. Claude's paid plans include Claude Code from one shared usage pool, so the coding agent is effectively free if you already subscribe. Google's AI Pro plan bundles 2 TB of Google One storage and higher limits inside Gmail and Docs, so if you were paying for storage anyway, part of the subscription pays for itself.

When to pick Claude

Pick Claude if writing quality matters to you. In my own work, drafts from Claude need less editing to sound like a person wrote them. It holds tone across long documents, pushes back when instructions conflict, and handles nuance in business writing better than anything else I have used. For consulting deliverables, emails, and site copy, that difference is worth real money.

Pick it too if you are building or using agents. Claude Code is the strongest agentic coding tool I have used, and Anthropic's MCP standard has become the common way to connect models to tools and data, which means the ecosystem investment flows toward Claude first. If your use case is "give the model access to my systems and let it work," Claude is the safer bet.

When to pick Gemini

Pick Gemini if your life already runs on Google. Having the model inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Search removes the copy-paste tax entirely, and for a team on Workspace that convenience beats a marginally better standalone model. The deep integration with Android and Chrome pushes the same direction.

Pick it also for huge-input and multimodal jobs. Gemini's very large context windows let you drop entire codebases, hours of video, or piles of PDFs into one conversation. Its native handling of audio and video, plus built-in image and video generation on paid plans, covers ground Claude simply does not. And at the API level, Gemini's per-token list prices generally undercut Claude's, which matters at volume.

What most comparisons miss

Benchmark tables miss that these companies are running different strategies, and the strategy predicts the product better than any leaderboard. Google monetizes attention and bundling, so Gemini's job is to make Google products stickier, and it shows: the free tier is generous, the integrations are deep, and the standalone experience is secondary. Anthropic monetizes the model itself, so Claude's job is to be worth paying for on its own, and that shows too: better writing, better agents, less breadth.

The other miss is treating this as a one-time choice. Model quality leapfrogs every few months, and both vendors' top models are close enough that most people cannot tell them apart on everyday tasks. What does not leapfrog is workflow lock-in. Choose based on where your work lives and which ecosystem you want to deepen, not on whichever model won a benchmark last week.

My verdict

Claude for craft, Gemini for reach. If you write, code, or build agents for a living, pay the $20 for Claude Pro and you will feel the difference in output quality every day. If your work lives in Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, Google AI Pro at $19.99 is the obvious pick because integration beats marginal quality for that kind of work. Price is no longer a tiebreaker at the subscription level, so pick the ecosystem, and revisit yearly rather than chasing each model release.
