Competitor keyword analysis

Competitor keyword research shortcuts 80% of the manual work. Instead of generating keywords from scratch, you pull your competitors' top-ranking pages and use them as your seed list.
Who counts as a competitor for SEO?
Not necessarily your business competitors. SEO competitors are any sites that show up on the same SERPs for queries you care about. This includes:
- Direct competitors (same product/service)
- Indirect competitors (same audience, different product)
- Content-only competitors (blogs, review sites, media)
How to identify SEO competitors
- Search your top 10 priority keywords
- Note which domains appear in the top 10 across multiple queries
- Those are your real SEO competitors
This frequently reveals competitors you hadn't considered (affiliate sites, industry blogs, trade publications).
The content gap analysis
Every major SEO tool has a "keyword gap" or "content gap" feature. You enter 2-4 competitor domains; the tool returns every keyword they rank for that you don't. That's your gap, your target list.
Variations:
- They rank, you don't: immediate opportunity
- They rank top-10, you rank 20-50: push existing content up
- They rank, you rank but lower: their content strategy is working; study it
Which competitor pages to study closely
For each competitor, pull their top-20 pages by traffic. Look for:
- Which pages drive the most traffic (their wins)
- Which keywords those pages rank for
- What format those pages are (guide, listicle, tool, data study)
- How many backlinks each has (authority signal)
The reverse-engineering question
For each of your competitor's top pages, ask: "Could I produce something better? What's my angle?"
"Better" means at least one of: more depth, more recent data, original research, unique case studies, clearer structure, better UX, or coverage of a sub-topic they missed.
Watch out
- Don't clone. Imitation without improvement rarely beats the incumbent.
- Check if their pages still rank. Some "competitors" ride legacy authority even though their content is old.
- Some competitor keywords won't fit your business. Filter for relevance before prioritizing.
