Gradually increase frequency and watch unsubscribe/spam rate.
What to do with this
- Test cadence on a 20% holdout, rather than ramping for the whole list, the holdout tells you the true frequency ceiling
- Watch unsubscribe + spam rate as leading indicators, they rise before revenue drops
- Prioritize consistency over frequency, a weekly sender who skips produces worse retention than a twice-a-month consistent sender
- Segment frequency by engagement tier, high-engagers can tolerate more, low-engagers need less or get moved to sunset
- Re-evaluate cadence quarterly, market norms shift with season and audience maturity
