Content upgrades

Content upgrades offer a resource specific to the post the user just read. Contextual relevance drives 5-20x signup vs generic popup.
Examples
- Blog post on keyword research + upgrade: 'keyword template'
- Post on email copy + upgrade: '10 tested subject lines'
Implementation
- Inline in the post
- Modal triggered by click
- Dedicated section near the CTA
Investment
Each upgrade takes effort. Prioritize top-traffic posts.
What to do with this
- Build content upgrades only on your top 10-20 traffic pages, effort doesn't scale to every post and compounds on top-traffic ones
- Match the upgrade to the post's exact topic, "checklist from this post" beats "general newsletter" consistently
- Track opt-in rate per upgrade, below 10% means the upgrade isn't specific enough or the post doesn't need it
- Use inline placement (mid-article, end-article), side-column upgrades get ignored compared to in-flow ones
- Deliver immediately after opt-in, content upgrade subscribers who wait for delivery often unsubscribe before the first email
