Early wins

Early wins are the small moments of success a new user experiences in their first sessions. More early wins → higher retention.
Examples
- Sending the first message
- Creating the first project
- Getting the first response
- Seeing first data
- Completing first task
Design for
Build onboarding around achieving multiple small wins in the first session, not one big win at the end.
Celebrating wins
Acknowledge wins: confetti, notification, progress bar. Minor dopamine hits reinforce.
Avoid fake wins
Don't congratulate users for achievements that aren't real. Users feel condescension.
What to do with this
- Design onboarding around 3-5 small wins in the first session, one big win at the end loses users mid-flow
- Celebrate real wins with subtle UI feedback (progress bar, confetti, notification), skip fake celebrations users see through
- Sequence wins from easiest to most meaningful, the first 30 seconds must produce visible progress or users bounce
- Measure completion rate per win, not just final activation, reveals where in the flow you're losing people
- Pre-populate data where possible, a user's "first project" created with sample content feels like a win in 30 seconds
